This past weekend Kate and I went to both Home Depot and Lowe’s in search of cabinets for the kitchen. We got all the customary catalogs and looked at everything they had in stock and so on. Sunday night I laid out the floor plan for the room and selected the particular cabinets and their sizes. We have also narrowed down the field of potential cabinet wood shades. So today we’ll be going to Lowe’s and ordering all of the cabinets. Knowing when to expect the cabinets will allow me to plan the stages prior to the cabinets being installed. Stage one will be removing the items from the current cabinets, removing the current cabinets, removing the three layers of flooring, and tearing down all of the drywall in the room. The second stage will be the raising of the ceiling one foot. Since we’ll have the room gutted and we have the space in the attic, we’ll be going with a nine foot ceiling. This should really open the room up and give our little house a bigger feel. The third stage will be all of the electrical work that needs to be done. Things like putting outlets were they’ll need to be for the counters, running the correct grade wiring for the range and the refrigerator, and hanging and wiring recessed lighting in the ceiling. The fourth stage will be putting up drywall in the entire room and then taping and spackling. After the room is primed and painted we can start to install the cabinets. Once that is completed counter tops can be installed and the finishing touches can be applied. There are other little steps I left out but nobody cares about them. I’m hoping the whole process doesn’t take more than two months. If it’s deep into April and the kitchen isn’t done it won’t be a good thing. Pictures will be on the site before any destruction begins. That way everyone can get a full understanding of how awful the current kitchen is.
